David describes his rescue with the memory of someone who was really there: brought up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; feet set upon a rock; goings established.
Notice the sequence. God does not merely lift you out of the mire and leave you at the edge. He sets feet on rock and steadies the steps that follow. Rescue includes the standing afterward.
