The God who sings

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
Zephaniah is a short, severe book — which makes this verse all the more startling, sitting near its end like a window flung open. The mighty God, in the midst of His people, does three unexpected things: rejoices, rests, and sings.
Most of us privately assume God’s disposition toward us is patient disappointment. This verse flatly contradicts it. He rejoices over thee with joy — the wording almost stammers with delight. He rests in His love: settled, not reconsidering. And He sings — over you, the way a parent sings over a child who is finally home and safe.
You will do nothing today impressive enough to earn that song, and nothing clumsy enough to stop it. It is not a review of your performance. It is His delight in His child. Walk out into the morning as someone being sung over.
