Walking in light

18 June 2026 · 1 min read

I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12, KJV

Notice what the follower is never asked to do: generate light. The claim is entirely on one side — I am the light of the world — and the human part is simply to follow, the way you keep close to a lantern on a dark path.

This rearranges a common burden. Many of us try to be our own light: to see far enough ahead, to have the whole route figured before stepping. But lantern-light was never for the whole route. It is for the next few steps, renewed as you walk, sufficient precisely because the light-bearer moves with you.

“Shall not walk in darkness” is not a promise that the world brightens. It is a promise about the walking — that the one who stays near Him always has enough light for the step being taken. Today will ask for several steps you cannot yet see. Keep close to the lantern.
