Songs in the night

By Niall Florence · 19 August 2026 · 1 min read

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
Psalm 42:8, KJV

The psalmist, downcast and far from home, notices something: in the daytime the LORD commands his lovingkindness, and in the night his song shall be with me. Even the night has a soundtrack.

Night songs are their own genre — quieter than morning praise, often minor-key, always honest. God does not require you to sing daylight songs in the dark. He gives night ones, and stays for the singing.

If you are in a night season, ask him for the song that belongs to it. Prayer to the God of my life, the psalmist calls it. It counts as music.
