Sun and shield

29 April 2026 · 1 min read

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11, KJV

Sun and shield make an unusual pair. The sun gives — light, warmth, growth, the sheer generosity that makes mornings possible. A shield protects — it stands between you and what would wound. Most sources of good in life are one or the other: the career that provides but does not protect, the safety that shelters but does not warm. The LORD God is both at once.

Then the promise that has steadied generations: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Read it carefully, because it cuts two ways. The things God has withheld from you — the door that closed, the timing that failed — this verse quietly reclassifies them. If it was withheld from a child walking with Him, then whatever it looked like, it was not, in the final accounting, a good thing for you. That takes some believing on certain mornings. It is still true.

Walk uprightly today — not perfectly, but honestly, facing Him — and trust both halves of the name: the Sun for what the day needs given, the Shield for what it needs stopped.
