The Morning Psalm

The secret place

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Psalm 91:1–2, KJV

The opening verb decides everything: he that dwelleth. Not he that visits in emergencies, dropping by the secret place when the sirens start. Dwelling is residency — the daily, unremarkable habit of living near God — and the psalm’s famous protections belong to residents.

Notice also the movement between the two verses. Verse one states the general truth; verse two makes it personal: I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress. The psalmist takes the doctrine and signs his name to it. Every generation has to do that individually — “God is a refuge” comforts nobody until it becomes my refuge, said aloud, in the first person.

So say it this morning, in your own voice, about your own day: my refuge, my fortress, my God — in Him will I trust. And then dwell: return through the day, not just in the emergencies. The shadow of the Almighty is a residence, and the rent was paid by Someone else.
