Already there

These words were spoken on a succession day — Moses, at the end of his life, handing the impossible job to Joshua in front of the whole nation. The young man was about to walk into a future full of rivers, walls, and giants he had only scouted. The promise given him has two tenses, and both matter.

He goeth before thee: the future you are dreading is not unvisited territory. God is already in Thursday. Already in the appointment, the conversation, the year ahead — arranging, preparing, standing in rooms you have not entered yet. And He will be with thee: the present keeps its company too. Before you and beside you; the coverage has no gap.

Then the double negative that generations have leaned on: He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee. Whatever handover, threshold, or unscouted country you are facing, the sequence is fixed — He goes first, you follow accompanied. Fear not, neither be dismayed is not a demand for nerve. It is the reasonable conclusion.
