The cry that is heard

Three verbs, one sentence, and the whole economy of rescue laid out: cry, hear, deliver. Notice what the human contribution is. Not a composed prayer, not a demonstrated track record, not a plan presented for approval. A cry — the least sophisticated sound a person can make, and the most honest.

David wrote this psalm after an episode of genuine desperation, and its confidence is a survivor’s confidence: the hearing is guaranteed. In a season of trouble, half the pain is the suspicion that nobody is listening — that the cries go up and dissolve. This verse closes that question permanently. The LORD heareth. Present tense, standing arrangement, no office hours.

And then the scope of the last clause: out of all their troubles. Not the respectable ones only, not the ones that weren’t your fault. All. The deliverance keeps its own schedule — sometimes swift, sometimes slow enough to grow patience — but no trouble on your list is outside the contract. Cry today, plainly. You are heard before you finish.
