I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
“The Ancient of Days” is the title Daniel gives God in his great vision of heaven, where he sees the LORD seated on a fiery throne, his garment white as snow. It is a picture of eternal, unshakable majesty.
The title captures God's timelessness — he is older than the ages, the one who was before all things and will outlast them all. Thrones and kingdoms come and go before him; he alone endures.
In Daniel's vision, the Ancient of Days sits in judgment, and dominion is given to “one like the Son of man” — a passage Christians read as pointing to Christ. Eternal authority rests in perfectly good hands.
When the world feels ruled by forces beyond our control, the Ancient of Days is a title of deep reassurance. History is not adrift; it is unfolding before an eternal throne, held by One who judges rightly.
