And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
El Elyon — “God Most High” — declares God's supremacy over everything and everyone. The name first appears when Melchizedek blesses Abram in the name of “the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth.”
To be “Most High” is to be above all rivals — above every earthly ruler, every false god, every power that threatens. Nothing and no one outranks him.
This name reassures us when the powers of the world seem overwhelming. However mighty a threat appears, it stands beneath the Most High, who possesses heaven and earth and answers to no one.
El Elyon invites worship and calm. If the highest authority in all reality is good, and holds heaven and earth in his hand, then the anxious heart can rest under his rule.
