In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Elohim is the very first name of God we meet in Scripture, in the opening line: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Before we learn anything else about him, we learn that he is the Maker of all things.
The word is grammatically plural — a plural of majesty, expressing the fullness of God's power and greatness. Many Christians also hear in it an early hint of the God who is one and yet, as the New Testament reveals, exists as Father, Son, and Spirit.
To call God Elohim is to confess that everything owes its existence to him. He is not one power among many but the source of all that is — strong enough to speak worlds into being from nothing.
When life feels chaotic or fragile, Elohim is a steadying name to remember. The God who made the heavens and the earth is more than able to hold your small corner of them.
