And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
El Shaddai — “God Almighty” — is the name by which God appeared to Abram at the age of ninety-nine, promising him a son when every human hope had run out. It is a name for the God whose power begins where ours ends.
“Shaddai” carries the sense of overwhelming might and, many believe, of sustaining provision — God as the all-sufficient one, more than enough for every need. He is not merely strong; he is strong precisely where we are weak.
God gave Abraham this name at the very point of impossibility. That is where El Shaddai loves to work — in the situations too big for us, where only almighty power will do.
When you face something beyond your strength, El Shaddai is the name to hold. The Almighty is not stretched by your circumstances; he is more than enough.
