Jehovah Nissi

The LORD My Banner

Pronounced yeh-ho-VAH nis-EE

And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
Exodus 17:15, KJV

Jehovah Nissi — “the LORD my banner” — is the name Moses gave an altar after Israel defeated the Amalekites. As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; the victory belonged to God, not to their strength.

A banner in ancient warfare was the standard soldiers rallied around, the sign of who they belonged to and fought for. To call God our banner is to fight under his name, gathering our courage around him.

The lesson of the battle was that the victory was the LORD's. Israel fought, but their winning rose and fell with their dependence on God. He was the banner over them, the reason for the triumph.

In your own battles, Jehovah Nissi is the name to lift up. We do not fight for victory in our own strength, but under the banner of a God who has already secured it.
