Jehovah Sabaoth

The LORD of Hosts

Pronounced yeh-ho-VAH tseb-ah-OTH

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Psalm 46:7, KJV

Jehovah Sabaoth — “the LORD of hosts” — pictures God as the commander of vast armies, the hosts of heaven at his word. It is a name of overwhelming power, used often by the prophets and psalmists in times of threat.

The “hosts” are the heavenly armies — angelic powers beyond counting — all under God's command. When Israel faced enemies too strong for them, this name reminded them whose side they were on.

Psalm 46 pairs this might with tender nearness: “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” The one who commands the armies of heaven is also our personal refuge and shelter.

When you feel outnumbered by what you face, Jehovah Sabaoth is a mighty name to remember. The Lord of every heavenly army is with you, and he is your refuge.
