Jehovah Tsidkenu

The LORD Our Righteousness

Pronounced yeh-ho-VAH tsid-KAY-noo

In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Jeremiah 23:6, KJV

Jehovah Tsidkenu — “the LORD our righteousness” — comes from Jeremiah's promise of a righteous King to come from David's line. In a time of corrupt rulers, God promised one whose very name would be “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Righteousness is being right with God — and this name makes a staggering claim: the LORD himself becomes our righteousness. It is not something we achieve but something he is, and gives.

Christians see this promise fulfilled in Jesus, in whom God provides the righteousness we could never earn. As the New Testament puts it, he is “made unto us... righteousness.” Our standing before God rests on him, not on us.

This is deep comfort for anyone weary of trying to be good enough. Your righteousness is a name — the LORD's own name — credited to you by grace. Jehovah Tsidkenu is your righteousness.
