Son of God

The divine Son, one with the Father

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16, KJV

“Son of God” is among the most important titles for Jesus, declaring his unique relationship to the Father. He is not a son of God as we become God's children, but the Son — eternally one with the Father.

The best-loved verse in the Bible turns on it: “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” Jesus is the one and only Son, sharing the Father's very nature.

To confess Jesus as the Son of God is to confess his deity — that in him, God himself has come to us. It is the confession the whole New Testament is written to awaken: “that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

This title assures us of how much we are loved. The Father gave his own Son for us — the costliest gift imaginable — so that through the Son we might become children of God ourselves.
