In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” With these opening lines, John gives Jesus one of his most profound names: the Word, or in Greek, the Logos.
A word is how a person makes themselves known. To call Jesus the Word is to say he is God's self-expression — the way the invisible God speaks himself into the world so that we can finally see and know him.
This Word is eternal (“in the beginning”), personal (“with God”), and fully divine (“was God”). And astonishingly, John says, “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” The eternal Word became a man.
In Jesus, God has spoken his final and clearest word. If you want to know what God is like, look at the Word made flesh — Jesus, God's own self-expression, come to dwell among us.
