For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
“Wonderful Counsellor” is the first of Isaiah's titles for the coming Messiah. It promises a ruler whose wisdom is not merely great but wonderful — full of wonder, beyond anything human counsel can offer.
A counsellor guides, advises, and shows the way. To call Jesus our Wonderful Counsellor is to say his wisdom can be trusted absolutely — he knows the way forward when we are lost, and his counsel never fails.
Unlike even the wisest human advisor, this Counsellor knows the end from the beginning and loves us perfectly. His guidance is never self-serving, never mistaken, always for our good.
When you do not know what to do, the Wonderful Counsellor invites you to bring your questions to him. In Christ, the wisdom of God himself is available to guide your steps.
