Sabbath comes from the Hebrew shabbat, meaning to cease or to rest. It is rooted in creation itself: God rested on the seventh day from all his work, and blessed and hallowed it. The fourth commandment made this rhythm law for Israel — six days of labour, one of rest — a gift that protected people, servants, and even animals from unending toil.
Jesus clarified its purpose: the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. It is a gift, not a burden — a weekly declaration that our worth is not measured by our productivity, and that the world keeps turning when we stop. Hebrews points beyond the day to a deeper rest that remaineth for the people of God, and Jesus offers it in himself: come unto me... and I will give you rest.
