The Morning Psalm
Hebrew word

Yare

to fear; to revere; to stand in awe

Say yaw-RAY

Yare is the Hebrew verb to fear — and it lies behind one of the Bible's central phrases: the fear of the LORD. This is not the cringing terror of a slave, but the reverent awe of a child before a good and mighty Father: wonder, respect, and glad submission all at once. It is the fitting response to the greatness and holiness of God.

Scripture calls this yare the beginning of wisdom and of knowledge — the starting point for seeing everything else rightly. To fear the LORD is to take God seriously enough to order your whole life around him. Far from being at odds with love, it is love's reverence; and Scripture promises that the secret of the LORD is with them that fear him.
