Luke was a physician — Paul calls him the beloved physician — and a careful historian. A Gentile, he wrote his Gospel and the book of Acts to a man named Theophilus, having investigated everything from the very first, that thou mightest know the certainty of those things.
His Gospel is the one that treasures the outsiders: shepherds, the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the women who followed Jesus. Loyal to the end, Luke was with Paul in his final imprisonment when others had left. His name suggests light.
Luke is a short, strong, hugely popular classic — clean, warm, and easy to love.
