Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
Five loaves, two fish, and twelve baskets left over — the only miracle in all four Gospels.
Facing a hungry crowd of five thousand men, Jesus takes a boy's five barley loaves and two small fish, gives thanks, and distributes them until all are filled — with twelve baskets of fragments left over. It is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels.
What happened
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples... as much as they would.
Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
They filled twelve baskets with the fragments... over and above unto them that had eaten.
What it means
The disciples saw only the deficit — what are they among so many? — and Jesus began with the little that was offered. He did not create bread from nothing but multiplied what a boy was willing to hand over. It is a lesson repeated throughout Scripture: God does much with the small things placed in his hands.
The twelve baskets of leftovers are not an incidental detail. After feeding thousands from almost nothing, there is more at the end than at the start — the abundance of God is never depleted by generosity. The one who gives thanks and breaks bread for a multitude has infinite supply.
In John's Gospel this sign launches the great teaching that follows: I am the bread of life. The physical bread points to a deeper hunger and a greater provision. Jesus feeds bodies to reveal that he himself is the true bread come down from heaven, and that whoever comes to him shall never hunger.
Quick answers
- How many people did Jesus feed with five loaves and two fish?

- Yes — it is the only miracle besides the resurrection recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, underscoring its importance to the early church.
