The soul was made for nearness to God, and feels the distance when it drifts. This prayer is for closing the gap — a longing to walk close with him again.
The prayer
Father, I have let distance creep in — busyness, distraction, small compromises. I miss you, and I come back today.
You promise that if I draw near to you, you will draw near to me. So here I am, drawing near. Meet me more than halfway, as you always do.
Teach me to walk with you through the ordinary hours — to talk with you on the commute, to notice you in the small mercies, to keep short accounts and a soft heart.
Let me not be content with knowing about you. I want to know you. Be my nearest company today and every day. Amen.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you — the distance is never his doing, and the way back is always open.
