A Prayer for the Loss of a Parent
For the grief of losing a mother or father — comfort, memory, and hope.
Losing a parent shifts the ground beneath us, whatever our age. This prayer is for the raw days and the quiet ones after — for anyone who has just become the older generation.
The prayer
Father, my parent is gone, and the world feels strangely orphaned. You are near to the broken-hearted; be near to mine now.
Thank you for their life — for what they gave me, and even for what they could not. Hold the good memories close, and be gentle with the hard ones.
Comfort me in the waves that come without warning — a song, a smell, a phone I cannot call. Let me grieve honestly, without hurry and without shame.
And hold my hope steady: that death is not the last word for those who are yours, and that what love has been will one day be again. Until then, be my comfort. Amen.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart — grief is not a lack of faith; it is love with nowhere to go. He is near.
