A Prayer for Patience

For slow seasons and trying people — a prayer for the patience God grows.

Patience is a fruit, not a talent — it grows from the Spirit, usually in exactly the situations we would rather escape. This prayer welcomes the growing.

The prayer

Father, you know where my patience runs out — you have watched it happen today already, perhaps.

Grow in me what I cannot manufacture: the longsuffering that is fruit of your Spirit, not strain of my will.

Give me patience with the slow season I am in, patience with the people who try me — and mercy on me, patience with myself.

You have been unhurried and kind with me for years. Make me like you, one interrupted, inconvenient day at a time. Amen.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Galatians 5:22, KJV

Fruit ripens slowly — even the fruit of patience. Give the growing time, and stay near the Vine.
