A Prayer Before Surgery

A steadying prayer for the night before or the morning of an operation.

Hospitals have a way of shrinking us. This prayer is for the gown-and-bracelet moments — for you, or for someone you love, before surgery.

The prayer

Father, you know exactly what tomorrow holds, and you are already there. I bring you my fear honestly — you are not disappointed by it.

Guide the hands of every surgeon, nurse, and helper. Give them skill, attention, and wisdom beyond their training.

Hold my body in your keeping while I sleep, and my family in your peace while they wait. Be nearer to them than the waiting-room clock.

I am yours, whatever comes — but I ask you plainly: bring healing, bring recovery, and bring me back to the people I love. Fear thou not, you have said; for thou art with me. I believe you. Amen.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10, KJV

Read the verse once more as they wheel you down the corridor: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.
