The end of the day is a natural time to hand things back to God. This evening prayer is for the wind-down — gratitude for the day, release of its weights, and peaceful rest.
The prayer
Father, the day is done, and I bring it to you before I sleep — the good in it, the hard in it, and the parts I would do differently.
Thank you for the mercies I noticed and the many I did not. Forgive where I failed today, and let me lay it down rather than carry it into the night.
I release into your hands what I cannot finish or fix — the unresolved, the worried-over, the tomorrow I cannot yet see. It is safe with you while I rest.
You give your beloved sleep; give me that gift now. I will lie down in peace, for you alone make me dwell in safety. Amen.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety — the day is his; you may put it down and rest.
