A Prayer for Grief

A prayer for a mourning heart — gentle words for loss, when words are hard to find.

In grief, prayer can feel impossible. This is a prayer for those days — short, honest, and undemanding — for when you can barely speak but still want to turn toward God.

The prayer

Lord, my heart is broken, and I don't have the words. You see the tears I cannot explain and the ache that will not lift.

You are near to the broken-hearted — nearer now, not further. I ask you to come close in this sorrow and stay.

I don't ask you to hurry my grief or to explain what I cannot understand. I only ask you to hold me while I walk through it.

Be my comfort, Lord, in the long night — and carry me toward the morning. Amen.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18, KJV

There is no right way to grieve and no timetable to keep. God is not waiting on the far side of your sorrow; he is with you inside it, and he will not leave.
