A Prayer Before Sleep

A quiet evening prayer to lay down the day and rest in God's keeping.

At the end of a long or anxious day, this prayer is a way to set it all down — the things done and left undone — and to sleep in peace.

The prayer

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you as it is — the good in it and the parts I would undo. Thank you for carrying me through it.

I lay down now what I cannot finish and cannot fix. It is safe in your hands through the night, safer than it ever was in mine.

Quiet my thoughts as I lie down. Guard the ones I love while they sleep. Let me rest, knowing you never do.

I will lay me down in peace, and sleep, because you alone keep me safe. Amen.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8, KJV

If sleep is hard to find, let this prayer be enough on its own — you don't have to solve anything more tonight. Rest is his gift, and he gives it to those he loves.
