Some of the hardest words to pray are 'not my will, but thine.' This prayer is for the act of surrender — opening the clenched hands and trusting God with what is in them.
The prayer
Father, I have been gripping this so tightly my hands ache. Today I want to open them and hand it to you.
You know what I am holding — the plan, the person, the outcome, the fear. I have tried to control what was never mine to control. I lay it down.
Not my will, but yours, be done. I say it slowly, and I mean it as far as I am able; help my willingness where it falls short.
I trust that your will is not a threat but a kindness, even when I cannot see it. Take what I have surrendered, and give me your peace in its place. Amen.
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Not my will, but thine, be done — the hardest prayer, prayed by Jesus first, and the doorway to peace every time we manage it.
