A Prayer for Depression

A prayer from the pit — few words, honest ones, toward the God who draws near in darkness.

Depression makes prayer feel impossible — which is why this one is short and asks for no performance. God hears from inside the pit, not just above it.

The prayer

Father, everything is heavy, and I do not have many words. Receive these few.

You have drawn people up from horrible pits before. I believe — help my unbelief — that you can draw me too.

While I wait, stay close. Send small mercies I can actually feel: sleep, a kind voice, one patch of light in the day. Help me accept help, from you and from people.

Set my feet on rock again, in your time. Until then, hold on to me when I cannot hold on to you. Amen.

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
Psalm 40:1–2, KJV

I waited patiently — the psalm's first word is waiting, not winning. If today is only waiting, that is still faith. And if the darkness is heavy, please also talk to a doctor or someone you trust; God works through them too.
