A Prayer to Forgive Someone

When you cannot manage forgiveness on your own — a prayer to begin it anyway.

Forgiveness is rarely a feeling first. It is a decision made before God, often through clenched teeth, repeated until it loosens. This prayer is the decision.

The prayer

Father, you know what was done to me, and you know it was wrong. I am not pretending otherwise, and neither are you.

But I have been forgiven a debt I could never pay — and I cannot hold this one and receive that one with the same hands.

So I choose, today, to forgive. Not because it stopped hurting, but because you commanded it and you will help me. Take the bitterness; I do not want to house it anymore.

Bless them — I say it by faith before I mean it. And heal what their wrong broke in me. I will pray this as many times as it takes. Amen.

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32, KJV

Even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you — forgiveness flows downhill from the cross. Stand under it and it reaches you, then through you.
