A Prayer for a Difficult Time

A prayer for a hard season — for when life is heavy and you need God to carry you through.

Some seasons are simply hard, with no quick way out. This is a prayer for the middle of one — not asking God to explain it, only to be present in it.

The prayer

Father, this is a hard season, and I am worn down by it. I don't understand why it has come, and I can't see the end of it.

You have promised to be with your people in the fire and the flood — not always to spare us the hard road, but to walk it beside us. I need that presence now.

Give me strength for today, and just enough light for the next step. Where this is doing a work in me I cannot see, help me trust your hand.

Carry me through this, Lord. I am holding on to you, because you are holding on to me. Amen.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
Isaiah 43:2, KJV

A hard season is not a sign that God has forgotten you. Again and again, Scripture shows him nearest in the flood — walking through it beside his people, and bringing them out the other side.
