A Prayer for the Loss of a Pet
For the grief of losing a beloved animal — real sorrow, and gentle comfort.
The loss of a pet is real grief, however some may minimise it. This prayer is for the quiet house and the empty basket — bring your sorrow to a God who made and cares for every creature.
The prayer
Father, thank you for the years of loyal, uncomplicated love this creature gave us. You made them, and you noticed when even a sparrow fell; you notice this small grief too.
Thank you for the comfort they brought, the routines they shaped, the welcome that met us at the door. The house is quieter now, and I feel it.
Heal this ache in your own gentle time. Let me be glad for the gift they were without rushing past the loss.
You are the God who heals the broken-hearted, in the large griefs and the small ones. Comfort every heart in this home. Amen.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
He healeth the broken in heart — no sorrow is too small to bring to the God who made every living thing.
