Bible Verses About Mental Health
Scripture for a weary mind — comfort for the anxious and depressed, and a very present help.
The Bible knows the exhausted mind — Elijah under the tree, David in the pit, the psalmist asking his soul why it is cast down. It offers no shame, only presence and hope. These verses are for the hard days, alongside the help of others.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul?... hope thou in God.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
The peace of God... shall keep your hearts and minds.
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
He brought me up... out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee... I will strengthen thee.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
The God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation.
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
A heavy mind is not a failure of faith, and you are not alone in it — Scripture's heroes walked here too. Bring the weight to Christ, lean on the people God provides, and hold on to hope: he is nigh to the broken-hearted.
