Bible Verses About Depression

Scripture for the darkest days — gentle verses for despair, heaviness, and the soul cast down.

When the heaviness will not lift, the Bible does not offer easy answers. It offers something better: a God who draws near to the downcast, who hears the cry from the pit, and who is patient with the struggling soul.

If you are in a dark place, please also reach out to someone you trust. These verses are a companion, not a substitute for the help and care you deserve.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalm 34:18, KJV

God is nearest, not furthest, in the darkness.

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
Psalm 40:1–2, KJV
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
Psalm 42:11, KJV
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
Psalm 3:3, KJV
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28, KJV
weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Psalm 30:5, KJV
The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
Psalm 34:17, KJV

You are not a burden, and you are not beyond God's reach. He is close to the broken-hearted, he hears every cry, and he is able to lift the head that cannot lift itself.
