Bible Verses About Forgiveness

Scripture on being forgiven and learning to forgive — verses on mercy, given and received.

Forgiveness runs in two directions in the Bible: the mercy God pours out on us, and the mercy he asks us to extend to others. The first makes the second possible.

These verses speak to the guilt that needs releasing and the grudge that needs laying down.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9, KJV

Confession is met not with condemnation, but with cleansing.

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32, KJV
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:12, KJV

East and west never meet — that is how completely God removes what he forgives.

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Colossians 3:13, KJV
though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Isaiah 1:18, KJV
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Matthew 6:14, KJV
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
Mark 11:25, KJV

Forgiveness is rarely a single act; more often it is a road you walk many times. But it begins with knowing how fully you have been forgiven — and letting that mercy loosen your own grip.
