I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
“I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.” Near the very last page of the Bible, Jesus gives himself this luminous name — the morning star that rises before the dawn.
The morning star appears in the darkest part of the night, just before daybreak, as the promise that morning is coming. To call Jesus the bright and morning star is to say he heralds a new day for a weary world.
For all who wait in darkness — grieving, struggling, longing for things to be made right — this name is pure hope. The night will not last forever; the morning star has risen, and dawn is on its way.
It is a fitting name to close the Scriptures with. Jesus, the bright and morning star, promises that the long night of this world's sorrow is ending, and an unfading morning is about to break.
