Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
The book of Hebrews gives Jesus a rich name: “a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.” A priest's role was to stand between people and God — and Jesus does this perfectly.
In the old covenant, the high priest alone entered God's presence on behalf of the people, offering sacrifices for sin. Jesus fulfils and surpasses this — he is both the priest who offers and the sacrifice offered.
What makes him a great high priest is that he understands us. Hebrews says he was “in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” He sympathises with our weakness because he has shared our life.
This is why we can “come boldly unto the throne of grace.” Our great high priest has opened the way to God and welcomes us there — one who knows our struggles and pleads our cause.
