I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches,” Jesus said. “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” It is a picture of the whole Christian life.
A branch bears fruit only by staying joined to the vine. Cut off, it withers. Jesus is saying that all our spiritual life and fruitfulness flow from staying connected to him — not from our own effort.
The key word is “abide” — to remain, to stay, to make our home in him. Fruit is not something we manufacture by trying harder, but the natural result of a life drawing its sap from Christ.
The honest words “without me ye can do nothing” are strangely freeing. We are not asked to produce fruit on our own, only to stay close to the Vine — and let his life bear fruit through us.
