And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus said; “he that cometh to me shall never hunger.” Having just fed thousands with loaves, he pointed past the bread that fills stomachs to the bread that satisfies souls.
Bread was the daily staple of life, the food no one could do without. By claiming this name, Jesus says he is not a luxury but a necessity — the true sustenance our inmost being was made to feed on.
We try to satisfy our deepest hunger with a hundred things that leave us empty. Jesus offers himself as the only bread that truly fills — a satisfaction that does not fade by the afternoon.
The invitation is simply to come: “he that cometh to me shall never hunger.” The Bread of Life is freely given, and the soul that feeds on him finds a fullness the world cannot supply.
