1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Meaning
Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
What does 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 mean?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 is three short commands in a row, and then a striking claim — that here, in these habits, is the will of God for us. For anyone wondering what God wants, Paul makes it wonderfully concrete.
“Rejoice evermore.” A settled joy, not dependent on circumstances, always available because it rests in God. Evermore means it is not reserved for the good days.
“Pray without ceasing.” Not non-stop words, but a continual turning toward God — an ongoing conversation running underneath the day, so that prayer becomes the atmosphere we live in rather than an occasional event.
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God.” Not for everything, but in everything — thanksgiving that persists even in hardship, because God is good in it. Paul then names all three as God's will: a life of joy, prayer, and gratitude is exactly what he desires for us.
