Psalm 37:4 Meaning
Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
What does Psalm 37:4 mean?
Psalm 37:4 is often quoted as a promise that God will give us whatever we want. Read closely, it says something deeper and better — it is as much about reshaping our desires as fulfilling them.
“Delight thyself also in the LORD.” The verse begins not with our wants but with our joy in God himself. To delight in the LORD is to find him, not merely his gifts, to be our treasure.
“And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Here is the promise — but notice what delight does to desire. The more we delight in God, the more our hearts begin to want what he wants. He fulfils our desires partly by refining them.
So this is not a blank cheque for our every whim. It is a promise that a heart anchored in God will be given its deepest longings — because those longings, shaped by delight in him, increasingly line up with his good will.
