Matthew 6:34 Meaning

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Matthew 6:34, KJV

What does Matthew 6:34 mean?

Matthew 6:34 closes Jesus' teaching on worry with a wonderfully practical instruction: deal with today, and let tomorrow wait its turn.

“Take no thought for the morrow.” Jesus is not forbidding planning; the older sense of “take no thought” means do not be anxious, do not let tomorrow's worries colonise today. Anxiety borrows trouble from a day that has not yet come.

“For the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” Tomorrow will have its own concerns, and — crucially — its own supply of grace when it arrives. We are never given grace for imagined futures, only for the day we are in.

“Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Each day has enough to handle without importing more. Jesus is teaching a rhythm of trust: meet today's needs with today's help, and leave tomorrow in the Father's hands until it comes.
