2 Timothy 1:7 Meaning

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7, KJV

What does 2 Timothy 1:7 mean?

2 Timothy 1:7 is Paul encouraging a younger, timid pastor named Timothy. It has become a lifeline for anyone who battles fear, because it reframes where fear comes from and what God gives in its place.

“God hath not given us the spirit of fear.” Paul roots out the assumption that our fearfulness comes from God. Whatever the spirit of fear is, it is not from him. That alone loosens its authority over us.

“But of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” In fear's place, God gives three gifts. Power — strength beyond our own. Love — which, as John says, casts out fear. And a sound mind — clarity and self-control where fear brings panic and confusion.

The verse does not shame the fearful; it re-equips them. When fear rises, Timothy — and we — are invited to remember what God has actually given, and to lean into power, love, and a sound mind instead.
