Psalm 91:1-2 Meaning — The Secret Place of the Most High
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
What does Psalm 91:1–2 mean?
Psalm 91 is the great psalm of protection, beloved in plagues, wars, and anxious nights for millennia. Its opening lines set the terms: he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Notice the verb: dwelleth. This is not a promise for occasional visitors but for residents — those whose habitual home is close to God. The secret place is not a location but a nearness, and the shadow of the Almighty falls on those who stay near enough to be under it.
The psalmist's response is a declaration: I will say of the LORD, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Saying it matters. Trust becomes sturdier when spoken — the psalm literally teaches you the sentence to say back to God.
Psalm 91 does not promise a life without arrows and pestilence; it promises a shelter inside them. Whatever this season holds, the invitation stands: move in close, stay there, and say the sentence — my refuge, my fortress, my God.
