James 1:5 Meaning

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5, KJV

What does James 1:5 mean?

James 1:5 is a wonderfully practical promise for anyone who feels out of their depth. When we do not know what to do, James points us to a God who gives wisdom freely.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” The starting point is honest admission — we lack wisdom. Rather than bluffing or despairing, the wise response is to ask. Prayer for wisdom is one prayer we are explicitly invited to pray.

“That giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” Two things about how God gives: liberally — generously, without stinting — and without upbraiding, that is, without scolding us for needing to ask. He does not sigh at our questions; he gives gladly.

“And it shall be given him.” The promise is plain. Wisdom asked for in faith is wisdom granted. When you face a decision beyond you, this verse hands you the first step: ask the God who loves to give.
