Deuteronomy 31:6 Meaning
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
What does Deuteronomy 31:6 mean?
Deuteronomy 31:6 is Moses' charge to Israel as they face an unknown land and daunting enemies. It reads like a call to courage, but the courage rests on something outside themselves.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them.” The command to be brave comes first, but Moses does not leave them to summon it out of thin air. He immediately gives the reason.
“For the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee.” The strength is borrowed from God's presence. They are not told they are strong enough; they are told God goes with them, which changes the maths entirely.
“He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” This is the promise the whole verse leans on — later echoed to Joshua and quoted in Hebrews. Courage in Scripture is never mere positive thinking; it is confidence in a God who does not leave.
