Psalm 23:1 Meaning — The LORD Is My Shepherd
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
What does Psalm 23:1 mean?
Psalm 23:1 opens the most beloved chapter in the Bible with a claim and a consequence: the LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. David, once a shepherd himself, knew exactly what he was saying — a shepherd's whole life is spent supplying the needs of creatures who cannot supply their own.
The word my is the hinge. It is not enough that the LORD is a shepherd; David makes it personal. And if the LORD is my shepherd, then the second half follows: I shall not want — not that I will never desire anything, but that I will never lack what I truly need.
The rest of the psalm simply unpacks this first line — green pastures, still waters, the valley, the table, the house of the LORD for ever. But it all rests here: get the Shepherd right, and everything else in the psalm becomes yours.
