What does 1 Corinthians 13:13 mean?

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. First Corinthians 13:13 closes the Bible's great love chapter by ranking the three cardinal virtues.

Faith, hope, and charity (love) abide — they last, unlike the spiritual gifts Paul has just said will pass away. These three endure into eternity, the enduring shape of a life lived toward God.

But the greatest is love. Faith will one day become sight, and hope will be fulfilled, but love never ends — it is the one that continues even in heaven, because it is the very nature of God. To pursue love above all is to pursue the greatest and most lasting thing there is.
